SoS Engineering of IoT Edge Devices
Many of us are unaware of the fact that we live immersed in the Internet of Things (IoT). By the end of 2018, over 22 billion embedded devices were connected to the Internet and this number continues to grow with predictions of more 50 billion connected devices by 2030. These embedded devices form the “brains” that ensure that our cars, dishwashers and cell phones operate efficiently.
Being relatively small and encased in the object that they operate, embedded devices come with their own unique set of requirements. They operate on strict power requirements with limited processing resources. In an industrial use case at ROPARDO, Eclipse Arrowhead services are being used to support the development of an interoperable layer of services that will efficiently link a printed circuit board design tool with the tools used in the lifecycle of an embedded product. This will help to integrate, reuse and recover traces between existing and new artefacts developed during the development lifecycle.
The result, so far, is the development of RoboFuse an IoT solution that facilitates device communication and management based on real time data analysis as well as cloud-based data storage all while adhering to robust security protocols. This interoperable layer adds significant power to systems of IoT devices and the knowledge gained from this use case will be made available to development professionals.
