A Digital Platform for Remote Earthworks Development
In our series of leaflets highlighting industrial results in the Eclipse Arrowhead project, we look at how large-scale infrastructure construction specialist Acciona is working to support the development of an interoperable digital platform that will improve the efficiency and sustainability of earthworks projects

Earthworks are a critical component in large scale construction projects such as building roads and railways. Since these projects often involve several types of heavy machinery operating across large areas, it is important to monitor productivity and ensure that anomalies and deviations from project plans are noticed and dealt with as soon as possible. More accurate and up-to-date data will lead to significant gains in efficiency.
The platform being developed is largely unobtrusive, inexpensive and can be used easily with all types of earthworks machinery to provide information that can be used to compare actual progress with planned progress. The platform will also collect detailed data to help create more accurate cost and time planning for future projects and assess the performance of sub-contractors.
